That was an amazing eye opener. I had no idea what was happening and now I DO! This is not just an issue for those farmers this is an issue for ALL of Australia. We should all do what we can to stop this blatent disregard for the environment. I have grave fears for the damage being done to the Arterial basin and am also very sorry for the land holders effected by the gases. The whole thing seems completely shonky and should be stopped. It is UGLY industry "taking what they want" without consent. The government does not have the right to inflict this vandalism on the environment. They are supossed to be our leaders and this is robbery. Robbing our land of a healthy future, robbing the farmers who own the land of their rural lifestyle and robbing our children of there future emergency water supply all in the name of HUGE profits. This is shameful behaviour and although these farmers are making it clear they do not want it, their pleas are falling on greedy rich deaf ears! :x

Totally agree Shirley. We have to raise the transparency of the issue and its procedures. We cant let what happened in America happen here.
To: All Council General Managers and Planning Directors in NSW

From: NSW Department of Planning

Date: 23 February 2010

The NSW Government is inviting feedback from community and industry on the directions and issues to be addressed in a coal and gas strategy for NSW.

The main aims of the strategy will be to:

guide sustainable development of the coal mining and coal seam gas industry
minimise adverse health, environment, agricultural and land use impacts of the industry
strengthen communication between government, industry and the community on coal mining and gas production matters.
A scoping paper has been prepared to:

provide a brief overview of the industry and its potential growth over the next 25 years
identify the key environmental, economic, social and health issues likely to be associated with growth in the coal mining and coal seam gas industry
outline initiatives already being taken by government to address these issues
promote community and stakeholder discussion to provide input to the development of the strategy.
The Scoping Paper and Terms of Reference can be found at

In addition, the Government will be launching an online forum to ensure a broad range of stakeholders can comment. More information on this forum will follow shortly.

On Monday 14 February 2011, following a regional forum held in Gunnedah on 10 February 2011, the Minister for Planning confirmed an additional three regional forums:

Wollongong; 24 February 2011, 10am-12:30pm

Lithgow: 25 February 2011, 10:30am - 1pm

Singleton: 9 March 2011, 10:30am-1pm

These forums were advertised in local and regional papers. Details for registration can be found at
Hmm, plenty of notice, eh!

What disturbs me most about the plight these property owners now face, is that even voting a change in Government means more of the same. Both major party's focus on the $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ and as we saw from Tony Abbott at the last election, the mining company $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ will not only get his nod of approval but he will fight for them. State and Federal governments of either major party's would continue to subsidize their polluting operations using our taxes.
Just found this by googling Coal seam mining -

http://macarthur-chronicle-wollondilly. ... hn-hatton/

Voices are being raised
and now more than ever, we have to realize the Major Party's are blinded by the $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
and perhaps the only way to stop them is to load Senate seats with Greens and Independents to ensure the people, social/ environmental impacts have more importance than the Corp. $.

I hope Four Corners continues to expose these companies who take the profits and leave an expensive mess behind for others to deal with.

Update ... 156741.htm

I stand by the first paragraph of the above post

Would you grab a life jacket or merely change coloured deck chairs on a sinking ship?

To further support the above paragraph.... I have just read that our new Liberal Government is considering allowing developers into our State's National Parks for the tourist's $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ ... 1bl7m.html
