Remark Peter I wonder if you know of the Upper South East Dryland Salinity and Flood Mangement Scheme in South Australia. Over 410 kms of drains are currently being dug over an area which was once an giant interconnected wetland system (of which only 3%ish remains but which has (no suprise to you) turned to salt. People within the SA branch of the CSIRO and the State and Federal Gov. all persist however that drainage is vital. Details

Remark I can't help thinking of Fred Hollows when I think of Peter Andrews. Fred Hollows just ignored the red tape and just went out and did what he had to do.
Pack up some caravans, and just go to rural areas suitable for implementing Peter's ideas - please, without further ado.
Just do it!
We can't wait for politicians - who most often only care about the short term 4 years they are in office.
After this fantastic "Australian Story" Every farmer on this land must be now looking to see if they can apply these ideas to their own situation.
Congratulations Peter, rural reporter, family, friends and financial supporters - I feel very grateful to you all for your dogged persistence.
I'd like to see farmers contributing to your website to show photos of the progress on their farms, with observations and comments on further discoveries.
I also have Yeoman's book on Keyline techniques of farming, which might be of assistance to those who cannot use all of Peter's ideas because they have hilly country without a stream.
Of course, there is also Rudolf Steiners techniques in Bio Dynamic Farming, which improves the soil condition and fertility of the soil.
All of these techniques are valuable.
Thank you so much again Peter on your terrific success! I'm feeling more hopeful about our future in this dry abused country.

Remark I cried! Aah, the deep joy of "meeting" a man who can show us how to ensure the well being of our wonderful land. We MUST NOT let this man go unheeded - the health of our land is our health. Water will be more precious and expensive than gold in time to come. After each (historically) cyclic drought passes in Australia, the lack of water issue is put on the backburner. Stupidly.
I missed the first part of Peter's story but the second part was as inspirational and hopeful as anything I have ever seen. Thank goodness for his wonderful supporters, especially those who believe in him and support him financially as well. Don't bury this man - he's a rare jewel. His support and "cause" is going to be my "charity" and I will be spreading the word. I will be getting a copy of this story and showing it to my children - so they are aware of what is possible. And yes, it should be shown in schools. To you Peter, and your extended family - hang in there - it's worth it!!

Remark I watched with interest the 2 editions of Australian story concerning peter Andrews.
2 things really stand out for me.
The first is that the involvement of govt bureaucrats in land management seems to be a negative, yet many people still want to go down this road.
I ask, how can people that have never had any experience or affinity with the land know better than the people that are there managing it every day.
The second is, land management cost money, and with the very poor terms or trade the rural sector has, as a result of govt regulations and a compound tax system that ends up at the “land managers” bottom line as increased costs.
I now ask how can effective land management can be part of the industry, when our income is world based (we can feed the worlds factory workers), yet have production costs that are so far from being world competitive.
Something has to give, and unfortunately it is environmental investment.
Result is that govt regulates, causing more of the above.
Peter’s fight demonstrates the negative from urban Australia as I see it.
Thanks for the few that have stuck by him.
Maybe if the national leader had put the same effort into effective support for peter, things may have been different now.

Remark I was enthralled with the Peter Andrews story.
It’s about time the government listened and acted on his Natural Sequence Farming. For years the government have been doing ridiculous things in regards to our water supply.
For example, in my area of NSW (The Illawarra District) Everybody in the suburbs are buying water tanks because our dams are so low. And it is mandatory for any new house and subdivision that is built to have a water tank installed. But many years ago, the council made it illegal to have a water tank and were fining people if they had one.
It’s this simple, for years the governments ways of “fixing” the water problem have not worked. Peter Andrews solution does work!!
And to those people who still don’t think it could work in their area, give it a try, you’ve got absolutely nothing to lose.

Remark Hi Peter
It is wonderful what you are doing.
here is the text of a message I have just sent to the ABC:-
Re Australian Story, Monday, 13 June 2005.
This is a most interesting story, especially to me. But it is not new! In 1959, in British Columbia, Erik Collier published his story "Three Against the Wilderness" (copies of which may be obtained through abebooks.com). This is a book which I first read in the early '60s and have recently acquired a second hand copy from abebooks, and recently re-read it.
Collier as a young man, married a part Indian woman and they went to live in the bush, in the remote Chilcotin area of British Columbia, where they built a cabin and were going to exist by trapping. However, the land was a disaster. All the beavers had been trapped out, and so the hundreds of beaver dams in the area had been eroded away. Now the land was parched, lifeless. And below, on the main river into which the Chilcotin creeks fed, farmers were facing increasing ruinous floods interspersed with droughts and erosion. slowly their farms were dying. Collier's wife's Indian grandmother told him that it was all because the beavers had gone and that their dams had gone. She told him he must bring back the beavers.
collier, working with only himself, a horse and an axe and shovel and other hand tools, rebuilt an old beaver dam and then another. Farmers downstream on the main river told him to go ahead as he could not make things worse than they were. He was passionate about what he was doing. Eventually he persuaded the BC Game Department to let him have a few beavers which were released into one of his dams. Everyone held their breaths. The beavers stayed, they bred, they rebuilt many dams and made new ones. Once again this land acted as a sponge. Life returned to the area, many animals moved back, flooding lower down where the farmers were was controlled, water flow was controlled. Once again the land was productive.
Andrews is doing exactly what Collier did, and I urge you to read Colliers book which details all that he did.
In view of the sceptism towards Andrews, i would ask that you pass this email on to Andrews and to the scientists and the journalists and others who are helping him. It may help him to know that his ideas have already been tried and proven in Canada!
perhaps you might even read "Three Against the Wilderness" and do a follow up on australian story!
Yours sincerely

Remark Hi Peter
I am inspired by your understanding of the land and how you have applied this knowledge. I first heard your story on Margaret Throsby several years ago when I was working with aboriginal people in alice springs. At the time they also inspired me in their understanding of the land and how they can read the landscape. Is their any opportunity to involve aboriginal people to help with this venture as I know their must be some people out their that still have the knowledge of their land, the water and the floodplains.

Remark What a remarkable man. Peter has given his life and everything that he cherishes, in the hope that we will eventually understand and agree that 'the world is not flat'. After eight years of below average rainfall and drought throughout most of Australia, now is the right time to stop, listen, and open our scientific minds to Peters ideas and to applaud his visible success in regenerating the land. We have no time to waste. Gerry Harvey and Dick Pratt should be commended for providing financial support. It is now time for our government to take notice and act, before it is too late for all of our farmers.

Remark It is always amasing to see the blindness with which we treat people that should receive all the encouragement possible when their contribution is objectively considered. But I guess because Mr Andrew doesn't have diplomas that reassure some, the monetary wealth that is the only way to speak to others, or the slick appearance of conmen that have recked national icons by their dishonesty, people in power don't find him that attractive.
It is a relief to see that some scientists are humble enough to recognise where they are wrong and some others have faith in Mr Andrew's in-depth knowledge even if it doesn't fit current conventions. Sometimes, revolutions come from people who have the courage to stand up for what they intimately know is right.
We need more people like you Mr Andrew.

Remark I really respect the passion Peter has for the environment, I hope he will be vindicated.Taking risks and experimenting is what true science is about, our models at present are locked into "accepted" truths and narrow funding guidelines. I hope Peter's work will be a beach head for new paradigms. His work may have limited scope and some aspects such as using weeds are doubtful but slowing water and increasing biodiversity seem simple even obvious winners. I would like to see how that approach might work on our property in the rangelands of WA.

Remark Yet another inspirational Australian Story! Doesn't this just show you how extra-ordinary so-called 'ordinary people' (as our polititians call other Australians) really are. Congratulations Peter! You should be appointed Environmental Consultant to Australia on a salary package at least equivalent to the incoming Telstra CEO, since your contribution to the welfare of this country will be far more significant than his to Telstra. And perhaps the appointment could be made retrospective to compensate you for a little of what it has cost you.
In my opinion Peter has found the key not only to restoring our landscapes, but to restoring the natural water cycle over those landscapes. The solar energy expended in driving the water cycle (all over the globe) will contibute to reducing global warming and thus slow down the melting of the ice caps. Water increasingly retained within the landscape and not lost out to sea, will also cause a reduction in rising sea levels.
In conclusion, Peter Andrews is a national treasure! He should get the next "Australian of the Year" award and the prize money that goes with it.

Remark It is of no surprise to me the ideas and concepts of Peter actually work.
Much of what he says was first put forward in the early part of the 20th century by Victor Schauberger for Austria 1885-1958. He was known as the 'water wizard' He also suffered similarily at the hands of established thinking.

Remark Australian Story on Peter Andrew
In Tasmania, my great grandfather used to dig draining ditches on the river flats, dig down until he was out of sight. He also cut down trees by the hundreds and my father said if chainsaws had been around in his day, there wouldn’t be a tree left standing in Tassie. Pasture was everything. "Land clearing" was the religion. Bush and stones were the enemy. Even when I was growing up, Dad said never waste a walk, pick up an armful of rocks and chuck them on a pile. Clear that grass for cows and sheep. Grub out surviving sags, a kind of thick tussocky reed. Blackberries and ferns took their place and had to be combatted in their turn along with rabbits. I don’t know why my great-grandfather also planted willows along the creeks, causing blockages which I was told were a curse, for my Dad and his father to complain about all their lives. But we have never lacked water on that property and also had fish and platypuses. The sight of Peter Andrew swinging the scythe reminded me of my farming Dad who was a great tree lover, damned near a greenie.
Thank God for the ABC – none of the commercials would do this story or sponsor the Deakin lectures which have presented some wonderful addresses on environmental conservation and innovation.

Remark Encouraging to see Gerry Harvey backing this man with both moral and financial support.
What concerns me is that the government through the very eyes of the Deputy Prime Minister (John Anderson has viewed the work with media coverage on several occasions) appears to have done little or nothing to assist. With the millions of dollars that have been spent through NHT grants over the past decade for a whole range of good and indifferent landcare research and on ground projects you would have thought some avenue could have been found to directly assist Peter Andrews work. It is not as though the guy has failed to make representation for assistance in the past.

Remark Like so many others I rejoice that Peter Andrews has, not some psychic ability to divine water, but a humble awe for the natural workings of the land and water which he has observed around him. Few ever spend the time to 'see' or respond to what is clearly there and of course, fewer still will follow through as Peter Andrews has.
Reading the Guestbook entries I was struck by the usual jealous denigrations spouted by various environment scientists and landcare professionals who are as hide bound as the 'do nothing' landholders they try to convert. Why is it that those in power and with vested interests in their own pet theories have such closed minds? And how quick they are to dismiss without even knowing the subtleties of the work. Rejoice please! I am excited and hopeful that Peter's work will spread—and soon! Sadly some bureaucrats and environmentalists are perhaps likely to be the stumbling blocks.
Several writers seem to have come to the conclusion that a running stream is necessary. Well I may be wrong but it seems to me that Peter's methods could be applied to contours in many areas. I have seen this naturally occurring in sandy hill slopes where often springs well up through otherwise dry bushland and form green patches in areas held by logs etc. What if the scrub, weeds etc were mulched down in these areas—I think we would see the soil improvement Peter claims.
In another remarkable practical experiment in dry, flat north west plains with minimal rainfall, huge areas of dry pan salty clay, saltbush (sheep fodder) has been regenerated by low contour ponding. No streams there!
Thanks to Peter and all who have had the insight to make his work known. I would like to put it into practice.

Your methods of cutting down weeds before they can proliferate if thats what you do is great but can all farmers be that labour intensive? For such a simple idea and simple practices to be overlooked by scientists, and other land conservationists just proves it.

Remark Others have attempted to influence beaurocracy in the past in relation to these methods of correcting the system. All to little or no avail.
Will they listen this time?
Or will they continue down the same ol' path to ruin us all.
It is mostly the money people, the British Aristrocracy, that initiated the ruin of the Austtralian landscape for nothing more than short term profit.
Now, hopefully, real men of the likes of Gerry Harvey may be able to make a difference and return our land to fertility with clean and abundant water.
And, we can lock up large amounts of CO2 in the process.
Thankyou Peter, very much for your dedicated work.

Remark What a remarkable man Peter Andrews really is. It is a crying shame that departmental boffins are not able to swallow their pride and assist this man in correcting the salinity problem across Australia instead of placing obstacles before him. Gerry Harvey I salute you for supporting Peter in his quest to improve the landscape. I feel that Peter is a man who should be recognised for an Australian of the Year Award. Well done Peter.
