I'm sure I listened to a Radio National story (PM I thought) 10Mar10 telling that "someone" has developed a software package that can reveal "structures under the ground" 35 meters down (I'm unable to verify this!) And this has been used to show that the Australian inland was once "a very lively place" with rivers and forests etc.
Well Australia has always been a very flat land, so presumeably the rivers would have developed the same as Peter describes those now.
Would NSF ask this "whoever" if the river systems of long ago follow a pattern of wetlands down through floodplains to wetlands again?

I could not find the program on PM 10/03/10....so no closer to the source.
My understanding is that since the Australian continent broke away from Gondwanaland it lost the services of the 3 major rivers of Antarctica.
It thus had to develop new ways to capture rainfall so that it moved into the soil. It did this via perched wetlands and vegetation.
I think Dr Mary White covers this in her books...see Google.
