How landscapes function: Ancient Wisdom

Post by duane » Sun Nov 30, 2008 8:27 pm

Over 2400 years ago the following observations were made and written in the ancient Chinese text known as the Guoyu @ 400BC.

It is not known who made the observation, but it was profound and it is a universal truth as observed by Peter Andrews and his observations of the Australian landscape.

It says "If the mountain forest are over-exploited, the forest at the foot of the mountains will be destroyed, the swamps will be exhusted, the peoples strength will be used up and the fields will be devoid of crops and full of weeds. The gentlemen will express shock and regret. Moreover, how will there be any happiness?"

I would love to hear people's understanding of the above landscape description/sequence??....

SBS TV viewed this program on tuesday night. If you missed it IT IS COMPULSIVE VIEWING

Click on http://www.sbs.com.au/television then click on the TAB 'Watch Full Episodes' then click on 'Return of the Bible Plagues.Ep5. Sandstorms.'

It shows modern day China and Ancient Egypt....going thru the same landscape sequence that Guyou described 400BC and which PA has been trying to explain to us for the last 30yrs.

Its compelling as it tells the exact same story above that Guoyu wrote about and in the exact same sequence.

THE LINK IS ONLY UP FOR THE NEXT 9 DAYS SO GET IN QUICK TO SEE IT.......

Anybody out there prepared to accept my original challenge ABOVE??? which at the risk of sounding repetitive I shall put to this Forum again:

at the risk of exposing my very basic understanding, here goes...
he describes a "top down" nutrient cycle.
shows the connection between all landscapes.
that weeds are at the degraded end of the cycle.
this outcome comes out of not only disconnections in the landscape cycle but also an 'end of the line' type of disconnection between nature and humans.
humans cannot function if our landscapes do not function.

100% CORRECT

In fact, this is how ALL landscapes function.

From forestry down to aquaculture
From Mountains down to the sea
From the top of the hill to the bottom
From the top of a tree to the understorey
ETC
ETC.,

And ALL operating under the power of gravity.

The TOP is always the nutrient source
The bottom is the nutrient sink which is always recycled back to the top by animals, birds, insects etc
And in between is the productive landscape.

This is a self evident universal truth but how many farmers practice it and are aware of it.
