Re: UPDATE from Victoria

HI again, Thanks for all the information. Much more to mull over. I am with the planting of diverse plants, trees, shrubs, groundcovers and ensuring a wide mix of species. I believe the reason for planting so many trees close together is the low survival rate, sometimes as low as 15% (that is consid...

Re: UPDATE from Victoria

Hello Sceptic, I love your challenging thinking. I have another question to pose to see what you think. Eucalyptus are far more dominant than ever before. Isnt some of that due to fire and land clearing and doesn't the opportunistic Euclaypt and others that survive fire well become dominant. They se...

unconventional farming

HI, I just watched this and thought others could be interested. More unconventional farming that works well. An oceanographer tries her hand at wool growing. AIRLIE WARD, PRESENTER: Earlier in the program, we had sheep on Flinders Island, now a look at a very different approach to the animal. Sounds...

Re: UPDATE from Victoria

As long as its bushfire proof around our homes and we have safe havens for wildlife and farm animals. I would be happy with that! :)

Re: UPDATE from Victoria

This is an interesting read. I would like to add that every year it has become highly popular to plant trees. Tree planting day. Often supported by companies who are off-setting their environmental impacts. Many of the trees are Eucalyptus species. That does not make sense to me. Small shrubs, small...

Re: Mulching Gardens

HI Steph, either way. Organic matter added to your soil holds more water, living organisms and life in general. All this adds to the health of your soil. If the soil is hard and compacted and you dont want to dig then adding on top is easier. If the soil is healthy and not too hard there is no need ...

Re: Perched Water Tables

Why not arrange a consultation with Peter Andrews? It sound like your land needs to be assessed. Clay can be dried out by aerating and adding organic matter. If your land is a flood plain it has a natural recuring cycle and function. THis is Peters area of expertise. Depending on the size of your pr...

Re: Perched Water Tables

I am not a farmer but have a question for you. Should this particular piece of land be farmed? It sounds like it is a wetland and probably should remain so. Do you have a large property that could protect this wetland? No one else has answered so I am just curious. What is it that you would like to ...

Re: Exhaust emissions fertiliser

It’s interesting about skeptics. It’s interesting that they are not skeptical about their own way of doing things. Scientists are trained and programmed to record and measure and explain everything in small sequences without gaining understanding of a whole thing and how it works. Nature, water, wea...

Re: Bent Grass

Hi Sceptic, I agree with what you say about learning as much as you can about the species involved. I believe what PA is teaching is that we can change these conditions without purchasing fertilisers, gypsum etc. We can change these conditions by using natural means and the natural water movement in...

Re: Bent Grass

Sceptic, I have mulled over that one myself. I came to the conclusion that when mowing the grass, clippings are scattered and affected more by the elements and it dries out fairly quickly. I have seen when it is piled up in a heap, it does kill the grass underneath. Peter suggests piling in rows abo...

Re: blackberries

At some point the Blackberries at the reserve were sprayed twice about 3 years ago. They died off a bit then came back stronger than ever. Interesting thing is that a native blackberry used to grow at the reserve also. It is so similar to the introduced one that it probably got sprayed out. So it is...

Re: blackberries

Hello Mike, Thanks for that fascinating post. It is very good to hear that you are trying so many alternative methods and not giving up. In the reserve where I work I too have been observing blackberry. In one open area of the reserve which has mostly been a mix of native and exotic grasses Blackber...

Re: Silver Birch Trees

GIve it a try but stick to just a few centimetres out the top of the ground. If you really want to use long cuttings it is best to have more under the ground. You can also put in some slow release fertilser like granules to feed the cuttings once they root.
