Re: Fertiliser and NSF

Great recommendation Jodi. I read Percy's book last week. Another bloke making alot of sense. I had the same type of realisations about the things Percy Weston described as when I read Peter Andrews books. It provided me with explanations to things I had noticed when dealing with livestock and paddo...

Re: Allelopathy

I can't see anything detrimental by using logs. The information is out there somewhere on allelopathy effects in decomposing plants (Just have to find it). My simplistic way of looking at the process, thinks that you are providing a habitat for lots of sub-terrainian life (As explained in your link)...

Re: NEW FARMER NEEDS ASSISTANCE- Braken and Slashing

I have been wondering about whether a mulching machine, would be better than a slasher myself. The benefits of the machine that mulches, may be the production of a finer product. Is this better for the intended result? Compare then, a conventional agricultural slasher. It will still make the grasses...

Re: WHAT TO MAKE OF THIS DAM LOCATION

G'day Paul. I reckon he best way to get the answers to your questions, is to get out there on foot. Get walking around the property. Take pictures for later reference, when you're at home wondering about a particular aspect. The next time you walk around there, things will start to make more sense. ...

Re: The War on Willows

If you "discovered" an appropriate plant to replace Willows. One that did the same repair work and thrived in the same conditions as a Willow. Wouldn't it therefore vigourously establish in the area it was released (planted) and spread? Out-competing most other plants there, because conditions were ...

...... and i walk away from the computer. The brain starts clunking.... 3000 tonne of silt to an olympic swimming pool. 1000,000,000 tonne would fill 333,333.3 olympic swimming pools. Or Sydney harbour 1.6 times. 5000,000,000 tonne would fill 1,666,666.6 olympic swimming pools. Or Sydney harbour 8.3...

Re: Math problem

Duane,
Work on 1.2 metric tonne to the cubic meter, for fine dry silt.
Load 25 tonne to a truck and dog, or semi trailer combination.

Re: The War on Willows

Ghosta, I am a conventional farmer who came to this site seeking more knowledge. I'm quite happy with the information and the other posters on this forum. If I don't agree with something, I will do my own research. It can be as simple as sectioning off a given area and watching what happens. NSF to ...

Re: The War on Willows

Ghosta, can you tell me why willows would grow in this down stream scenario? Or any other plant for that matter. Why does any plant grow where it has? Just tell me the answer to that last question please.

I must add. I am one of your ignorant hick farmers, as you put it.

Re: Exhaust emissions fertiliser

Fantastic stuff Ian and Jodi! I've been following this thread closely. I was beginning to worry at the lack of recent updates. The season has been pretty ordinary in WA, as you don't need reminding. The more info I find on emissions fert, the more I'm convinced it's the way to go. A farmer in the NS...

Re: The War on Willows

Willows wan... err, I mean warriors? Bugger that. I'm a Salix supporter! The term "plant succession" says it all for me. You've got to have something growing in the ground. Or the ground heads for the coast. If you don't like Willows, plant something (suitable to your ideas/needs) to outcompete them...
