Re: Mother of Millions & Lantana. NSF in Qld.?

Hi Joanna, There has been a couple of mentions of Mother of Millions on here but no answer to the problem. Firstly getting to your question on poisoning like most poisonous plants for an animal to be poisoned it has to eat it and in sufficient quantities, with most poisonous plants this only occurs ...

Re: The War on Willows

Well, this is all quite interesting, in response to Shirley's question, some links you might find interesting (which say pretty much what I have been saying): http://tasfish.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=393:the-willow-&catid=65:issue-43-april-2003&Itemid=115 Alterations of typica...

Re: The War on Willows

The question was put, why eradicate willows? There are a number of reasons, some of which I'll outline. At the start I will say willows are great for riparian stabilisation however there are a number of other things to consider. As we've seen with the CSIRO press release willows use a lot of water, ...

Re: The War on Willows

Well that was all quite interesting, lets look at a couple of points from the CSIRO press release: “A comparative study of native vegetation water use lining the same watercourse, showed willows could be replaced with native vegetation and the annual water savings would be maintained.” According to ...

Re: The War on Willows

We have just been to Tooma to witness the catastrophic destruction of the Tooma valley by a recent flood and collapse of Mannus Dam (google it). What the press has not told or informed its readers about is the fact that below Mannus Dam the NPWS removed a 10km stretch of willows along the section o...

Re: UPDATE from Victoria

There's a lovely story in David Suzuki's book "Good News for a change" a researcher was studying the nitrogen cycle in Canadian forests and gave a talk to a gathering of Inuit people (or was it First Natons?), who apparently listened in fascination as he described the role of the salmon, being caugh...

Re: Iconic ‘Tarwyn Park’ under threat from mining ‘lunacy’

Having passed through the Bylong Valley on many occassions I regard that area as one of the most beautiful in Australia and mining it really is a crime. But just to show what is possible, the state goverment a few months ago canned the contentious Bickham Coal Mine and just last weekend scrapped the...

Correction, there is apparently some recent research into trees and soil fertility, I'll track it down next week.

Re: UPDATE from Victoria

I don't object to planting trees, I think it's a great thing but we do pay too much attention to trees and not enough to understory species and the constant message put out by Landcare, Planet Ark etc is all about trees we need to think more about what we plant and how, yes we need trees but we also...

Re: UPDATE from Victoria

Ok, now where was I? Yes, there has been human influence on the spread of Eucalypts but climate has played a major role in it as well, here's a bit of an introduction to them . Attributing the ills of the Australian environment and the fire sensitivity of it to one particular plant genus is a fairly...

Re: UPDATE from Victoria

G'day Shirley and thanks. That question opens a whole can of worms which may take me a while to go through but I'll try anyway. One of the things I've been ranting about for over a decade is the prevalence of PMT amongst both professional and volunteer NRM practitioners and by PMT I mean Plant More ...

Re: UPDATE from Victoria

Even when the wet edge of the water soaked paper dries out, it will catch and burn the edge. Dry paperbacks packed with VOC will burn like the edge of the paper, as too will dried out reeds when their season is finished, as too will the wet newspaper once it dries out. Take a look at the fire retar...

Re: UPDATE from Victoria

Aboriginals had 40-50,000 years of firestick policy. Rainforest will burn from the outside in. Its a long slow process but they managed it eg 15,000 years ago Lake Eyre was a forested wetland. Source? You need to also factor in long term climate change into this, over the past 100 000 years there's...
