Re: The War on Willows

Ghosta, you are narrow minded and keep attacking Duane although he has given you every opportunity to grasp NSF prinicples. I dont think Duane should bother with you any more. He knows what he is talkng about, it is you who do not...... and you have a very condescending manner. It seems you are nor...

Re: The War on Willows

Duane I m not sure why I have to continually spell it out again and again. Ill put it in the most simple terms I can. Because of the problems with some varieties of willows seeding and spreading uncontollably I believe it is better to use alternative plants. Which plant are used will depend on local...

Re: The War on Willows

Dune if your not happy wih my answer thats your problem. I have been a consitent advocate for the need for Peter Andrews work to be built apon, through experimentation and research. Open your mind up and think of the possiilities if his principles recieved broad support. Elements of NSF would be ado...

Re: The War on Willows

Ian, yes spot on about invasive natives. Duane,I dont think you should be looking to "bureaucrats" for any sort of input, I think you are looking in the wrong place. They are better left in the air conditioned offices to do their sums or whatever they do. Better to talk to some of the Government and...

Re: The War on Willows

Your starting to get the idea Duanne. Instead of attacking the bodies advocating willow removal and ignoring the reasons they give, why not say, "Ok I dont agree or even care about your reasons for advocating willow removal, but we will go along with your program if you can come up with some viable ...

Re: Understanding: Landscape Hydrology

Duanne a coupe of points- "THAT IS THE FIRST LESSON we all need to learn....that this landscape IS/was different in so many ways, that even today many do not even accept or understand these differences." Why is that? I suggest is most people are not even aware of the difference. And if they do, the ...

Re: Understanding: Landscape Hydrology

What is it that you do ghosta? Science, hydrologist, farmer, conservation ??? Shirley I am "retired", although not yet of retirement age so I guess you could call me an "investor". I am also a forester, with postgraduate studies in natural resource management. I have worked for both public and priv...

Re: The War on Willows

Willows are the only plant that can do this? I have no problem using willows providing they are of the variety that dont have the potential to spread uncontrollably (either because they are if the hybrid variety or can breed with hybrids if introduced). I realise most here dont give a damn if they d...

Re: The War on Willows

Ian I agree with much of your post. There are important lessons for those doing any kind of work along our waterways and lets hope that lessons wil be learned. The willow removal program is driven by much more than simply "a preference for one plant type over others" in most instances, although reas...

One things for sure, if I became a thief or murderer and you guys were the prosecutors in court, I wouldnt need a lawyer to defend myself and have the charges thrown out!

Re: The War on Willows

Duanne, you say the willows were left cut on the banks of the river (unsubstantiated report) yet the article you posted says broken branches and uprooted trees in Lake Burley Griffin. If you are goin to criticise government authorities in future, the facts should actually fit your story.

Re: The War on Willows

Ian thanks for your reply. The article refers to the removal of wood including willow debris floating in the lake. The source of this debris is not stated. You ASSUME it is the result of some sort of willow removal program, Im not sure how you came to this conclusion. The articles referes to hundred...

Re: The War on Willows

Duanne, all you have done is abuse the authorities for taking action. You have not explained what they are doing wrong,, nor have you offered an alternative. Surely you can dream SOMETHING up!

Re: Understanding: Landscape Hydrology

Duanne, think about the statistics you have quoted. If there is a prolonged and heavy downpour of rain when the ground is already saturated do these statistic apply? Well it may be a surprise for you to hear that nearly 100% ends up as runnoff. Thats why floods ocurr. And thats why dams can assist t...

Re: Understanding: Landscape Hydrology

Duanne how do you imagine a "class action" would be sucssfull? Why do you blame the government, what exactly have they done wrong? You say they +planned for this failure" yet the reverse is actully true; havent you heard of the Wivenhoe dam? Of course if it was larger it would have been better, but ...
